Go to:

- Start, Settings, Control Panel
- Open Add/Remove Programs
- Click Windows Setup tab
- Click Communications in the Components
- Click on Details
Dial-Up Networking, Hyper Terminal and Phone Dialer should be selected. If they are not
selected, click in the box to the left and then click OK (if you have to
select them you may need the Windows set up disk) The system may prompt
you to restart your PC. If so Just make sure you have saved any info
you want to keep and go through Shutdown under the Start Menu.

Close all other windows and Go To:

- Start
- Programs
- Internet Explorer
- Connection Wizard

Click to select the following
options (after selecting each option click on NEXT)
|
- I have an existing Internet Account through my phone line or Local Area Network
- Select this option if you are accessing the Internet using an Internet Service Provider or a Local Area Network
- Connect using my phone line
You might get a box that states your computer needs to install files needed for dial-up. Click OK(you might need your windows 9x CD)
The phone number to dial for off campus is (540) 365-6700 and the user name and password is your personal NST, NFS, etc. number and password
The rest of the answers for the setup wizard should be NO. You will be prompted to restart your computer. After it comes back up, close all other windows and
continue. You will now need to configure your TCP/IP configuration

Go To:

- START
- Settings
- Control Panel
- Open Network
- Click TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adapter In the components box
- Click on Properties

 Critical Step:
|
- You must go to the IP address tab and make sure it is set to obtain IP address Automatically
- You must go to DNS Configuration tab and enable DNS.
- Enter Host with any name you choose (ex. Jdoe) and Domain as FERRUM.EDU.
- DNS Server Search Order is 192.190.252.2 (to input, type in this number and click on ADD).
- To complete the Gateway Tab you will need to input the Gate way number as 192.190.252.1 (to input type in this number and click ADD).
- When finished, click OK.
- You will be asked if you want to restart your computer. Answer NO.
- Close out all windows back to your Desktop.

Final Step:
|

When the PC gets back up to the desktop , the final step in setting-up your computer is to check the PPP Configuration in the Dial-up Networking Module.
- Open the My Computer Icon
- Open Dial-Up Networking
- Point to the FERRUM.EDU icon and click on your right mouse button to get a drop-down menu
- Click on Properties with your left mouse button
- Click on Server Type (this might be a tab or a button). Make sure that Enable Software Compression and TCP/IP are selected and click OK
- Click on TCP/IP settings and make sure that: Server Assigned IP Address, Server Assigned Name Address, Use IP Header Compression, and Use Default Gateway on Remote Network are all selected. Click OK

Testing Your Connection:
|
- To test your setup, click on the FERRUM.EDU icon and then click on Connect.
- If the setup is correct you will hear the computer "dialing".
- A black box will appear asking for your Logon ID and Password.
- You will get a message "Connected at bps", this means you are connected to the Internet.
